Thanks to everyone who joined our session this morning on digital ads trends. If you have follow-up questions, please post them here — Eileen, Ryanne, Jesse, and Brian will try to respond throughout the day.
We didn’t get a chance to address a question about Facebook’s political ad ban and specifically the ban in Washington, so I’ll answer it here!
Washington State has one of the strongest public disclosure laws in the country. It requires ad platforms to show if asked, what ads ran, the targeting, and how much was spent. The state actually sued Facebook and Google for failing to provide this information and in response, Facebook and Google decided not to run political ads in the state altogether. As I mentioned, there are some tricks for getting around this ban that can work for organizations but it’s pretty difficult for candidates to get any content up. Maryland (and maybe other states?) also have ad bans.
